Experts warn homes set for horror cockroach season

The recent wet and humid weather has experts warning we're in for the worst season of cockroaches seen for years.

The epidemic will peak in four to five weeks and if numbers are as bad as expected, they could be creeping and crawling around for months.  Cockroaches are breeding in plague proportions, thriving in the heat and humidity.

"This season is shaping up to be a bigger roach season than we have seen in the past," Entomologist Bryce Peters said.  "Numbers will peak in the next month or two, particularly towards end of February, March."   (Read more

Sentricon™ AlwaysActive™ IS WHAT THE HOMEOWNER HAS ALWAYS WANTED!

Newly registered, Sentricon AlwaysActive from Dow AgroSciences, delivers all the benefits of both a baiting system and a chemical barrier, with none of the drawbacks.  Sentricon AlwaysActive controls termites from the day it’s installed and has actually been shown to eliminate multiple termite colonies before the Pest Manager has even detected then.

Approved for use around new and existing structures, the Sentricon AlwaysActive system consists of Sentricon IG Termiticide Rods and Sentricon in-ground stations. The Sentricon IG Termiticide Rods are a patented high density cellulose impregnated with 150 grams of hexaflumuron.  This highly desirable termiticide rod has been shown to be effective for up to five years in Australian conditions.  In numerous studies, termites preferentially consumed Sentricon IG Termiticide Rods compared to anything else, including wood.   (Read more)

The Year Ahead – an IR Update

Federal election

We are due a federal election where the government will be seeking a mandate to change the Fair Work Act 2009.

It is our expectation the federal government is unlikely to make any fundamental changes after the election to the current workplace relations system, despite the recommendations made by the Productivity Commission as part of its inquiry this year. Our view is largely predicated on two facts: one, the LNP coalition is still extremely sensitive to a “Work Choices” scare campaign if it tries to change even a comma in the Act and two, in any event, the Senate is incapable of dealing with change in this area as evidenced by its refusal to even pass legislation aimed at improving trade union governance. This is despite the criminal and amoral behaviour uncovered by the Royal Commission this year in its investigation into trade union corruption.   (Read more)

Pest controllers flat out as bed bugs run rampant in Cairns

WARM weather and a busy tourist season have given rise to record numbers of bed bugs in Cairns – and it’s not just backpacker hostels counting the cost.

High-end resorts have also been forced to call in pest control companies to carry out expensive treatments as clueless travellers transfer the bloodsucking parasite from their clothes and luggage into hotel rooms.

AEPMA member, Amalgamated Pest Control Cairns is responding to about 20 outbreaks a week and plans to hire more specialised staff to tackle the growing problem.
“Jobs have doubled since the end of November,” said Amalgamated's Robert Boneham.   (Read more)
