3.    Outstanding Trade Show – the exhibition halls will be filled with over 40+ exhibitors, from a wide variety of industries, will showcase the latest in products and technologies for pest management.  Keep an eye out for the "Suppliers' Market Specials" being held on the Thursday afternoon!

4.    Distinctive Social Events  – the conference promises to provide some wonderful opportunities to mix with peers and colleagues and to catch-up with friends, both old and new.   The conference will commence with a Welcome Cocktail Reception at Dolphin Lagoon in Sea World, where guests will be entertained with a Live Dolphin Show!  The following evening guests can kick back and enjoy the delights of a tropical themed Gala Dinner on South Stradbroke Island – which will include the much anticipated announcement of the Australian “Pest Manager of the Year”.

‛Termites in Asia’ – FAOPMA 2016 presented by Dr Charunee Vongkaluang, Thailand

Sherwood Chemicals is a research and development company focused on formulation chemistry for Professional Pest markets in SE Asia and Australia.  As part of its formulation development program, Sherwood Chemicals formulation chemists apply formulation know-how to develop and enhance the unique properties of off-patent molecules for targeted application to control urban and vector control pests.

Two recently developed novel formulations containing the non-repellent active ingredient Fipronil were explored by Sherwood for the transfer potential of the active ingredient Fipronil between treated and untreated termites in the laboratory and field.

The experimental research evaluation was carried out by Dr Charunee Vongkaluang at the Royal Forestry Department of Thailand. Dr Charunee and the team from the RFD explored the potential transfer effect of two commercial formulations of fipronil to the behavior of worker termites Coptotermes gestroi in the laboratory and field.  Promising results of the study have led to the integration of new application techniques for these two formulations to help solve termite infestations in SE Asia and Australia.

Who, What and Where do Mosquitos Bite?

Mosquitoes bite.  They need to bite. Female mosquitos require the nutritional hit of a bloodmeal to develop eggs.  The blood can come from many different animals.  Some mosquitoes are fussy with highly specific tastes, while others will feed on whoever, or whatever, is in the wrong place at the wrong time.  Understanding these feeding habitats can help better manage outbreaks of mosquito-borne disease.

The outbreak of Zika virus in Brazil has refocused the world’s attention on mosquito-borne diseases. Notwithstanding the unusual route of sexual spread, the transmission of Zika virus is relatively simple.  It is generally thought that only one mosquito species is primarily driving the outbreak and that the mosquito, Aedes aegypti, preferentially bites humans.  The pathogen is spreading from human to mosquito and to human again.  For many other mosquito-borne pathogens, transmission isn’t so simple.

Supermarket agreement gets the BOOT

A major supermarket chain’s enterprise agreement went ‘down down’ when the FWC Full Bench found, on appeal, that it failed the Better Off Overall Test (BOOT) The agreement sought to cover approximately 77,000 employees at the employer’s supermarkets around Australia, of which an overwhelming majority voted in support of the agreement being made. The main union covering the employer’s workforce also supported the making of the agreement.

In order to pass the BOOT, the FWC must be satisfied that at the test time, each award covered employee, and each prospective award covered employee would be better off overall under the agreement when compared to the relevant award.
