AS 3660.2 Open for Public Comment

As most people are aware, Standards Australia several years ago saw the need to review the standards in relation to termite control, mainly being the 3660 series. As we all know 3660.1 and 3660.3 have been finalised and are in the market place, and should be reviewed by all companies, with work practices changed if required, as the transition period finishes in May 2017.

In more recent times 3660.2 (Termite management - In and around existing buildings and structures – Guidelines) has been reviewed and is now available for public comment.  The public comment period is the ideal time to raise any problems or concerns with the proposed new standard, as once public comment is closed, any further comments cannot be reviewed. To make the best use of this stage of the review and to make your comments count, the following actions should be taken.

If you don’t like the wording, phrasing, or intent of a clause, state your reason or objection and then suggest a change or rewording, this ultimately makes it clearer to the working party of the circumstances.

Any comments on the draft can be submitted via the Standards Australia website (https://sapc.standards.org.au/sapc/public/listOpenCommentingPublication.action) via the public comment portal.  The public comment period will close at 23:59 on 24/1/2017.

Pest Manager of the Year 2017

Nominations for Pest Manager of the Year 2017 opens on December 1st 2016. Thank you once again to BASF who have again generously agreed to sponsor the national award.  Awards like this would not be possible without their generous support and without your participation.

Stewart Paterson, Commercial Manager for BASF’s Professional and Specialty Solutions said that “BASF has proudly encouraged industry best practice by supporting the Pest Manager of the Year awards for the past 7 years, and will continue to do so in 2017. With two new categories being introduced this year, we highly encourage all pest managers that adopt innovative and professional practices, to consider the opportunities the award provides and submit an application to be in the running.”

The winners will be announced at the Gala Dinner at the Rapid Solutions Conference in August 2017.  More information is available on the AEPMA website.
Vale Peter Lammond

After a relatively brief battle with illness, the pest control industry lost one of its’ greatest and best known characters, when earlier in November this year, Peter Lamond passed away at the Calvary Hospice in Kogarah NSW.  The number of industry stalwarts that attended his service, and the many who had travelled from interstate, paid testament to the reputation of this man, who truly was “Mr Pest Control”.

Having qualified with a degree in Biological Science, Peter began his career with WA Flick and earned his stripes actively completing service work in the field, before he realised the physical side of things, probably wasn’t his forte!  Indeed, his real strengths were in the areas of training, education and quality assessments, where he flourished under the guidance of his mentor, Peter Meadows and other notable industry experts within the Flick organisation.  Peter was always a career minded man, and if not for internal reorganisation within the business, this would surely have seen him complete his full working life at WA Flick.

As soon as the industry was made aware of Peter’s newfound status (being without employment), Rentokil immediately swooped on the opportunity and employed him as a Field Biologist in the early 1990’s where he worked alongside Richard Doyle, Andy Hamilton-Smith and John Cornish to name a few.  Peter remained with the organisation until his retirement in 2011.

As well as devoting his working time to both these companies, Peter also began work with TAFE in 1984 and many of the qualified Pest Management Technicians currently operating throughout NSW and beyond, owe him a vote of thanks for guiding them through the minefield that was the licencing process.  His characteristic dry sense of humour and penchant for the unusual, made him a brilliantly entertaining trainer and raconteur, and he will be well remembered for the many presentations he delivered at industry functions across Australia and New Zealand.

In his private life, Peter devoted much of his spare time to valuable work within his church, tending his garden, fishing, writing children’s books and supporting his mighty St George Dragons……his presence and influence will be greatly missed by his many friends within the industry.

REST IN PEACE PETER LAMOND……truly a Great Man!!!

An IR Update: Redundancy payouts must count regular casual employment

Redundancy pay has, up until now, been calculated by reference to employees’ permanent service only. But in a game changing FWC (Fair Work Commission) decision on what counts as “service,” a Full Bench has found that periods of regular and systematic casual employment, before becoming a permanent employee, are to be taken into account when calculating service.

When a shipbuilding company made a number of its employees redundant at one of its yards after the completion of a major contract, a union disputed the company’s redundancy pay calculation for permanent employees who had previously been employed as regular casuals with the company.

Advice from NSW Fair Trading to check the NSW Loose-fill Asbestos Insulation Register

Loose-fill asbestos is crushed raw asbestos which was installed in the ceiling spaces of NSW residential properties in the 1960s and 1970s as insulation. If disturbed, fibres can become airborne. Asbestos fibres that are breathed in can pose a risk to health. In order to provide safety, certainty and support to the community, the NSW Government has created the Loose-fill Asbestos Insulation Register (LFAI Register), which enables the broader community to know whether any particular residential property is affected.”

NSW Fair Trading wants to make sure that all companies and tradespersons who may have a need to access either the ceiling or wall cavities, or indeed simply enter a premises, is aware that a premises may be affected by loose-fill asbestos. As noted in the flyer, any NSW premises can be checked by simply doing a search of the Register.

The flyer also advises that a premises that is affected should also have a warning sign at the switchboard.

French Delegates’ Trip to Australia

Earlier this year, I received an email from my good friend, Dr Don in Melbourne, to try to liaise with a group of French Pest Management Industry delegates intending to coming to the FAOPMA / AEPMA conference at Sea World.  As a native French speaker, I jumped at the idea?  What I did not realise at the time, was how much work and logistical planning was going to be involved! Translating messages and emails from French to English and English to French was very time consuming!  The French team consisted of 15 delegates and partners from single operators to company directors with 60 employees, a delegate from the Justice Department and some people from the Island of Reunion (a French colony).  They were all very nice people.

Expressions of Interest - Code of Practice

AEPMA is planning to develop a Code of Practice for rodent control in Australia. Following the release of the European Code, AEPMA is seeking to go on the front foot and develop its own code in this area.

Companies and/or individuals who may have an interest in this area are invited to respond to us by 7th December so that the Working Group can be confirmed at the next AEPMA Board Meeting on 8th December.

Participants of working codes of practice should note that these are primarily conducted via video conference and those wishing to participate should have a superior technical knowledge of the subject area.

The mosquito invasion plaguing south-east Australia

Australians are being warned to prepare for an onslaught of mosquitoes in Victoria, South Australia, New South Wales and Queensland.

An unseasonably high number of the bloodsucking insects have already been widely observed across the country, especially around Melbourne.

The spike in annoying mozzies is a growing public health concern, with flood-affected areas in Victoria forced to bring forward their mosquito management plans.

Termidor® Foam arrives at the station

Before establishing a liquid barrier against termites or installing a termite monitoring system, pest managers often undertake a Stage 1 termite treatment.

Stage 1 treatments are designed to alleviate termite pressure on a structure, or eradicate the termite colony from where the infestation is originating. Foams, dusts and baiting systems are the most widely used types of Stage 1 treatments used by pest managers.

Termidor® Foam the most recent termite innovation from BASF can be used for treating a range of termite infestations including in wall voids, timber in service, poles and post and directly treating nests and bivouacs. Many pest managers are already familiar with the product as it is easy to use and effective.

Update from NSW/ACT Branch Chairman

Just a few words about our good friend and colleague Peter Lamond (Field Biologist with Rentokil for over 30 years).  Sadly, Peter passed away on Saturday 12 November.

The funeral was held on Tuesday 22 November at Guilford Community of Christ Church (Sydney) which I attended along with an excellent representation from the Pest Management Industry, as well as chemical manufacturers, supplier representatives and TAFE teachers.  Peter had a lot of friends in our Industry and they filled a good part of the church.
