Huntsman Spider Caught Snacking on Possum

We know huntsman spiders are helpful when it comes to keeping indoor bugs in check, but it turns out they might be able take care of your possum problem as well.

These extraordinary pictures, taken at Mount Field National Park about 100 kilometres north-west of Hobart, show a huntsman swapping out its usual diet of crickets, flies and moths for a much larger feed of pygmy possum.

They were posted by Justine Latton to the Facebook group Tasmanian Insects and Spiders and have gone global as another reminder of Australia's incredible wildlife, where even common house spiders can turn admirers to committed arachnophobes.

But it was a case of steady hands and hearts when Ms Latton's husband Adam and his mate Roger "the Brave" happened upon the grisly scene as they were fixing a door at a part-owned shack inside the park.

APVMA Update: Chlorpyrifos - Proposed Regulatory Decision

The Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) has today announced a proposed decision to suspend all domestic and home garden products containing the insecticide chlorpyrifos from Australian shelves after 28 days.
The Proposed Regulatory Decision (PRD) to suspend all domestic and home garden products with chlorpyrifos after 28 days, including those used for commercial pest control, and cancel these products after three months, is the result of a comprehensive review of the chemical’s environmental and health impacts.
The APVMA is an evidence-based organisation, and this action on chlorpyrifos included the consideration of hundreds of studies.
The full list of products affected is available on the APVMA website, along with more information for pest control professionals regarding the proposed decision on chlorpyrifos.
There is a wide range of chemical and non-chemical insecticide products that are alternatives to chlorpyrifos products. Contact your local retailer to discuss the options. Alternates can also be found using the APVMA’s PubCRIS product search tool. You can filter the search by pest, host, and product type.
Please contact your supplier to discuss the disposal of commercial stocks of affected chlorpyrifos products. Your local state or territory agricultural chemical regulator or ChemClear can also provide advice on disposal. Always follow the label instructions for the disposal of the product and container.
The APVMA looks forward to working with the pest control industry to ensure the industry can access information about the PRD.
