AS 4349.2 - Open for Public Comment

AS 4349.2: Inspection of Buildings – Part 2: Common Areas of Group Titled Properties has been reviewed and is now open for public comment.

The public comment period is the ideal time to raise any problems or concerns with the proposed new standard, as once public comment is closed, any further comments cannot be reviewed. To make the best use of this stage of the review and to make your comments count, the following actions should be taken.

If you don’t like the wording, phrasing, or intent of a clause, state your reason or objection and then suggest a change or rewording, this ultimately makes it clearer to the working party of the circumstances.

Any comments on the draft can be submitted via the Standards Australia website (https://sapc.standards.org.au/sapc/public/listOpenCommentingPublication.action) via the public comment portal.  The public comment period will close at 23:59 on 21/3/2017.

Hungry Termites marching on Melbourne with homeowners warned it 'could get ugly'

First came the clouds of mosquitoes, then the swarms of flies and now insect experts are warning that teams of termites could be hard at work in homes across Melbourne.

Thanks to a series of ideal weather events, termites are currently "having a ball" said Dr Don Ewart, an entomologist who teaches pest management at Melbourne Polytechnic.

According to Dr Ewart, the same weather conditions that have made the environment right for the recent mozzie and fly explosion are also perfect conditions for termite breeding and exploring.

The Zenith of Ant Bait Innovation - ZENITHOR™ Gel Ant Bait - New from Ensystex

The Innovation Team at Ensystex have just released another new and strikingly effective product, Zenithor Gel Ant Bait. Ensystex Regional Director, Mr Steve Broadbent, advised, “Zenithor Gel Ant Bait represents the culmination of many years of patient research, exacting science, field trials and development improvements.

“Our commitment has always been to develop a product that is better than anything else in this segment. A key to unlocking the success of our formulatory expertise was the selection of the (S)-isomer of indoxacarb as the active constituent. I can honestly say, ‘Zenithor Gel Ant Bait truly represents the zenith of ant bait innovation’.

“ZENITHOR Gel Ant Bait provides a stable gel with a moist, viscous presentation at all times, to ensure superior consumption by ants for an extended time frame; even in hot tropical conditions. When dispensed, it forms an homogenous ‘bubble’, that maintains its shape and does not dissolve into the substrate like many gels; thus ensuring prolonged availability for consumption by ants. Whilst Zenithor remains palatable for an extended period, the reality is that, due to its high palatability, most ant feeding occurs within the first 24-72 hours, with colony elimination mostly occurring within the first week.

Why Good Employees Quit - an editorial from LinkedIn

“People work for people – they do not work for businesses”          – Donn Carr

This has been my mantra for as long as I can remember. The message is so simple, full of truth and direction, yet it is consistently ignored by human resource departments, managers and owners alike and they wonder why their turnover is so high or they are always having to look for new people. The problem is with the managers – and seldom the employee or the quality of the workforce. This has been proven and well documented by study after study.

If you or your organisation is experiencing high turnover or even more turnover than you would like, start with examining yourself and how you interact with your team. Here are nine proven reasons guaranteed to cause good employees to quit. Any one of them alone starts the process - if you find three or more you have some serious work ahead of you to correct.

A New Territory Sales Manager (Pest) at Bayer

Bayer has appointed a new Territory Sales Manager (Pest) in Queensland.  Mr. Chris Mills comes to Bayer with 17 years of pest management experience.  Chris has worked in both the residential and commercial markets, including fumigation and pre-construction, while representing several different multi-national pest management firms.  He has worked in roles such as Technician, Sales Representative and middle management.

Daryle Swarz, Pest Market Manager for Bayer, said “We are delighted to welcome Chris on-board.  He has an enormous amount of experience in general pest control, but also has considerable expertise in termite control.  Chris has been heavily involved in termite baiting, from geographical areas such as the cool winter climates of Canberra, South Coast and country New South Wales, to the more mild Sydney metro, and up to the sub-tropics of his home base in Queensland.  He has a very well-rounded knowledge of the varying termite species, along with the equally varying associated feeding patterns and characteristic behaviours – knowledge that is key to successful termite baiting.  Chris will bring added value to our termite range of products including Premise® Termiticide, Kordon® Termite Barrier and Agenda® Termite Baiting System.

Chris said “I am grateful for the opportunity and excited with my new role with Bayer.  It will be wonderful leveraging the resources that Bayer provides, as well as the wealth of experience and knowledge that comes with such a large research and development company.

“I am also excited at the prospect of leveraging key relationships with all the major distribution channels in the industry.  Distribution plays a major role in arming the end user with valuable technical knowledge on product, hardware and industry regulations as well as best practice guidelines,” he added.

Take Care Cashing Out Leave - an IR Update

Some employers are persuaded to agree to personal/carer’s leave being cashed out, but there can be a catch. The correct way to cash out unused personal leave where long shifts are worked can deliver an unexpected and unwelcome result – it can cost a lot more than it should.

A mining company operating 12 hour shifts assumed when employees wanted to cash out leave that the actual amount it would have to pay would be based not on a 12 hour day, but a standard day. This was because the entitlement to sick leave is expressed as 10 days a year. It assumed, like most employers, that the entitlement was founded on the standard 38 hour week, or the roughly equivalent, eight hour day. This is where the trouble started – the question then became, what is a “day” for these purposes in this situation.
