This presentation will address the complicated biology and behavior of red imported fire ants (Solenopsis
invicta Buren). Specific emphasis will be placed on factors that contribute to the global invasive nature
and history of these ants, and what Australians can expect if this invasive species is allowed to
proliferate and expand their range in your country. Additionally, a variety of fire ant management
strategies will be discussed.

"Pest Management in the VET Sector, Jobs and Skills Council & Pest Management Training
Product Redevelopment"
John Murray
Flick Anticimex
Anthony Chan - BuildSkills Australia
ABSTRACT View

This presentation will consist of two parts:
- Part 1 - will provide an update on Pest Management in the Vocation Training & Education sector
including the role of Jobs and Skills Councils
- Part 2 - an interactive session where we will commence redevelopment of the PM Training Package
As Pest Managers, do you consider yourself to be a Technician or Trade Worker or are you a Labourer? What
skill level do you need to be a Pest Manager? How does the Australian government view the Pest Management
occupation. These questions will be addressed in the first part of this presentation as we look at Pest
Management as an occupation under ANZSCO and the work that has been undertaken to categorise our occupation
more correctly. Jobs and Skills Councils (JSCs) have been established to provide industry with a stronger
voice to ensure Australia’s vocational education and training (VET) sector delivers better outcomes
for learners and employers. The Built Environment JSC, Buildskills Australia, will work closely with our
industry on matters of Workforce Planning; Training Product Development; Implementation, Promotion and
Monitoring and Industry Stewardship. AEPMA has commenced collaboration with Buildskills, and this ongoing
relationship will ensure Pest Management continues to have a strong voice in the VET sector. In part 2 of
this session, we want to hear from you, on how we can improve on the Pest Management training package (or
products as they are now referred), including:
- What are the basic skills required of a PM (at licensing)?
- What are the specialised skills required of a PM?
- Timeframe for training at different PM classes of licensing
- Do the current offerings in Cert 3 still work or should changes be made.
Make no mistake, we are at a watershed moment, one that has not been present since the commencement of the
National Competency Standards. We have a blank slate, so if the industry feels that Pest Management training
needs to change, now is the time. It will be up to all of us to make it happen. So, I hope you can join us
for this session and make your mark on the future of Pest Management training.

Over the past five years, I have provided expert reports on properties where claims were lodged against
timber pest inspectors. This presentation aims to assist inspectors in conducting thorough inspections and
producing reports that meet AS 4349.3: 2010 standards, thereby reducing the risk of claims and litigation.
The rise in litigation underscores the importance of inspectors avoiding shortcuts and ensuring their
reports are detailed and compliant. Insurance is crucial, but minimizing the risk of claims through diligent
inspection practices is paramount. Vendor and budget-priced reports often lead to issues, as inspectors may
produce minimal reports to secure regular work from real estate agents or due to internal conflicts of time
and money. Proper inspections require sufficient time for thorough analysis and review of photographs,
ensuring that all mandatory areas are inspected as per AS 4349.3. Inspectors must be physically capable of
accessing all necessary areas and should not rely solely on technology. Visual signs of termite activity,
such as mud trails and flight holes, must be diligently checked. Inspectors should also be vigilant about
potential deliberate concealment of termite damage by vendors. The paper highlights the need for systematic
inspection procedures, appropriate use of technology, continuous improvement in report writing, and
effective time management to provide a sustainable and profitable service while minimizing and managing risk

Ninox Robotics Geospatial Specialist Ben Ross will present on Drone-based surveying of invasive animal
populations.
The presentation will include some background information on drone technology and services, examples of
the
data that can be obtained and how it can be analysed to determine invasive animal populations and used
for
biosecurity purposes.
BIO
I'm a Data Analyst & GIS developer specialising in geospatial and environmental sciences. I have
over a decade of experience as an environmental scientist and have worked in a range of industries from
private enterprises to state government. At Ninox I process our thermal and other geospatial data from
our UAV's which are typically surveys of pest plants over huge remote areas, or of pest animals like
deer or pigs. This data is normally of such a huge quantity that we are unable to view it all
personally, so a computer vision model is the only way to deal with it all. I develop these algorithms
so we can identify target species faster and allow Ninox to cover large areas in a short amount of time.
Also I create the custom software that controls our hardware in the field so we can operate exactly how
we
and our clients want.
