At the recent AEPMA National AGM, Eris Hess was appointed as the Associate representative to the AEPMA National Board.
Eris has extensive experience in Pest Control, getting his first taste for the industry working at C Rudduck in Melbourne during school holidays 28 years ago packing Pyrethrum products. After university he worked at Rudducks in sales and marketing before taking a departure from the Industry for a short period to work in London.
In 1997 he returned to Agserv in Sydney “to help out for a few months”, but Ken Davidson had other plans. The next year Eris became Managing Director. The business has evolved from an even mix of chemicals, application services and equipment, to principally supplying chemical products to Australia’s 7,000 pest control operators in 1,500 businesses.
“I joined the business 15 years ago and have successfully merged 3 businesses and had two acquisitions of competitor businesses. I recently acquired the last 40% shareholding making me now the sole owner” say Eris.
On a personal note he’s 41 years of age and lives in Rozelle with his wife, Genevieve and 2 children (Alex, 9; Pippi, 7). He enjoys travelling, fishing, diving both Scuba and snorkelling and is a keen AFL fan following the Hawks.
When asked what he sees as the challenges for pest control in the future Eris responded:-
“Pest control industry chemicals and practices are increasingly under pressure from a vigilant regulator, which will cause less chemical active to be available. Whilst a decrease in penetration of pest control treatments and thus a decline in the spend per person in Australia on pest control services and the market is not growing as fast as population growth
Also complex regulations, WHS, paperwork and compliance are squeezing the single operator out of the market. And the challenge of increased cost of acquisition of new customers with little increase in pricing of services.”
AEPMA welcomes Eris to the National Board. Next month meet Tommy Stewart, the new Victorian representative.
