National Training Package Review Update
The Federal Government changed the rules on the way Training Packages are put together, with a much stronger emphasis on assessment.
Earlier this year a review process of the Training Package for our industry commenced with the first round of drafts published, comments received and in most cases changes implemented. A big thank you to all who have provided input into the draft and the industry professionals who volunteered their time as subject matter experts for the various units. The AEPMA Board is actively involved in this process.
The second round of drafts has just closed for comments. This is the final round, the standards produced are about what you as an industry want to see happen.
A meeting will be held on December 15, 2014 to consider the final feedback received and endorse final changes. After that date we’ll find out more about how things will progress through 2015, and when the new Training Package will come into force.

System III – enables ‘surgical’ cockroach control
If you carry out regular cockroach jobs you know how difficult it can be getting in, around and under obstacles with your hand held sprayer.
Fortunately, cockroach treatment has just got a lot easier with the recent introduction of the System III from BASF. The System III takes crack and crevice treatment to a new level, enabling pest managers to make precise application of pressurised products right into the harbourages where cockroaches eat, rest and reproduce. It’s not bullying, it’s managing……..an IR update
With the dark cloud of a bullying claim looming over them, employers seem to be walking on eggshells when it comes to managing their employees. Some of these hesitations can be put to rest though, as an employee failed to win anti-bulling orders in a recent Fair Work Commission (FWC) decision due to the exercise of “reasonable management action.”
In this case, the employee was underperforming in his role and as a result, his manager instigated a structured program aimed at monitoring and improving his work performance. Continual feedback regarding the employee’s performance was integral to the success of the program. Read More

Patrick Legey meets with Indian Pest Control Association Vice President
On 3 November, I, on behalf of AEPMA NSW, was pleased to receive the Indian Pest Control Association Vice President Mr Jaldhi Trivedi from Elite Corporation in Mumbai.
Mr Trivedi was taken on Austrapest sites to observe how cockroach treatments were carried out in Sydney. He was also taken to a site with active Coptotermes spp. termites present in the house and where an Exterra system was installed as a control method.
Mr Trivedi was very impressed with our trucks, fittings and the technology we use in Australia. He almost fell over when I told him how much, an average technician wage was in Sydney in the Pest Management Industry. The average wage in Mumbai in the same Industry is between 2600 and 2900 Rupies a month which is equivalent to @ $ 50 a month. Read More

QLD Office of Fair Trading reviews unfair contract terms
One of the functions of the Queensland Office of Fair Trading (OFT) is to proactively conduct compliance activities in industry sectors that may not be compliant with current legislative requirements. Businesses may unknowingly be in breach of newer legislation such as the Australian Consumer Law (ACL) which was enacted in Queensland on 1st January 2011. More specifically the unfair contract terms provisions which relate to standard form contracts.
As such, OFT is currently sample testing traders terms and conditions including those who provide pest control services to consumers. This sample testing and education process is to assist traders obtain a clearer understanding of their legislative requirements to comply with the ACL. Some pest control businesses have already been contacted in Queensland and are assisting with the sample testing and review. Read more
